Behind every story lies a combination of challenges that, together, make access to healthcare extremely difficult.
In many parts of The Gambia, healthcare facilities are scarce and often located far from villages. To reach a hospital, some families must travel many kilometres and face transport costs that not everyone can afford.
Even when people manage to reach a healthcare facility, the necessary medical staff, equipment and medicines are not always available. Many healthcare professionals work with limited resources and have few opportunities for professional development, while population growth places increasing pressure on the healthcare system each year.
These challenges are compounded by the growing prevalence of chronic diseases, the lack of prevention programmes and financial hardship, which forces many people to delay seeking care until their condition becomes critical.
As a result, treatable illnesses can turn into emergencies, and even basic treatment may come too late.
